Disability Inclusion
Disability Inclusion is a Victorian Government initiative that supports schools to better include and support students with disability and additional learning needs. Its aim is to ensure that all students can access learning, participate fully in school life, and achieve their potential.
It focuses on creating inclusive classrooms where adjustments allow students to engage with the curriculum alongside their peers.Teachers plan for a range of learning needs and provide reasonable adjustments to support student access and participation. These adjustments may include changes to teaching strategies, learning materials, assessment methods, or additional adult support. The goal is to remove barriers to learning while maintaining high expectations for all students.
When a student requires support beyond typical classroom adjustments, the school may begin the Disability Inclusion process. Staff gather evidence about the student’s strengths, needs, and the adjustments already in place. This information may include assessment data, work samples, observations, and reports from allied health professionals.
If appropriate, the school may apply for a Disability Inclusion Profile meeting. This meeting involves school staff, parents or carers, and a trained facilitator who works with the team to identify the student’s functional needs. The outcome helps determine the level of support and resources the student may require.
Following the meeting, the school uses the recommendations to plan targeted supports and adjustments. Schools continue to work closely with families and regularly review strategies to ensure students are supported to participate and succeed in all aspects of school life.
